Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture: What to Expect From One Session—and a Series

You know that feeling when you look in the mirror and wonder, When did I start looking so tired? Who is this person?

Maybe your complexion doesn’t reflect how you feel—or maybe it does. Either way, you’d like to look and feel more refreshed, and you’re beginning to explore your options.

Perhaps you’re hesitant to use neurotoxins or fillers and would prefer a more natural approach to support your skin. If so, facial rejuvenation acupuncture may be worth considering.

In this blog, I’ll explain what facial rejuvenation acupuncture is, what happens during a treatment, and why I typically recommend a series rather than a single session.

What is facial rejuvenation acupuncture?

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture—or FRA—combines cosmetic acupuncture with full-body acupuncture, facial cupping, and facial gua sha.

Treatment may help address concerns such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Dullness or uneven tone

  • Puffiness

  • Sagging

  • Facial tension

  • Changes in firmness and elasticity

FRA may help with the general appearance of stress and fatigue that can show up on the complexion.

This is a whole-person treatment. We aren’t only looking at the surface of your skin—we’re also considering sleep, digestion, stress, hydration, hormonal changes, and other factors that may be impacting how you look and feel.

As we age, changes in collagen production, elasticity, facial volume, muscle tone, and bone structure gradually affect the appearance of the face.

FRA cannot replace lost bone or volume. However, it may support circulation, ease jaw and facial tension, and encourage the skin’s natural repair and renewal for a healthier, more vibrant complexion.

The goal is not to change your face or make you look like someone else. It’s to help you look rested, refreshed, and still like yourself.

What happens during treatment?

Your initial consultation

Before your consultation, you’ll receive an intake form to complete. Although you’re coming in for a facial treatment, I’ll ask questions about your entire body because your skin often reflects how your body is functioning.

For example, digestion and bowel regularity can influence inflammation, hormonal balance, and skin health. Sleep, stress, nutrition, and hydration can also affect your complexion.

During your consultation, we’ll review your health history, discuss your concerns and goals, and make sure FRA is an appropriate treatment for you.

I’ll also answer any questions you have.

Once your consultation is complete, you’ll be ready to schedule your first treatment.

Your FRA session

During treatment, you’ll rest comfortably on a treatment table. Many people request the table warmer and a heat lamp over their feet, helping the body settle into a cozy, relaxed state.

We begin with acupuncture. Acupuncture points are placed on areas of the face according to your concerns and individualized treatment plan.

Full-body acupuncture points are also included to support relaxation and address patterns that may be affecting your skin and overall well-being.

Red light therapy is available as an optional add-on.

Each session concludes with facial cupping and facial gua sha. These gentle techniques are deeply relaxing and restorative. They support healthy circulation and lymphatic movement while helping release tension in the facial muscles and surrounding tissues.

What might you notice after your first session?

After one session, many people report feeling deeply relaxed. Their mind may feel quieter, their jaw and face less tense, and their body more at ease.

You may also notice that your complexion looks brighter or more refreshed. Increased local circulation can temporarily bring more color and vibrancy to the face.

These early changes may be subtle and temporary. One treatment can be a restorative introduction to FRA, but gradual and more sustained changes generally require consistency.

Why do I recommend a series of 12 treatments?

I typically recommend a series of 12 weekly treatments initially because FRA works gradually, with each session building on the last.

This isn’t just a facial treatment. We’re also addressing the whole-body patterns that can affect your complexion—and that takes time and consistency.

It isn’t designed to create an immediate or dramatic transformation.

I often compare it to building strength. One workout doesn’t create lasting change, and one FRA treatment cannot provide the same support as a consistent series.

Repeated treatments give the skin and underlying tissues ongoing circulation and stimulation, while allowing time for the body’s natural processes for skin repair and renewal. This includes collagen production.

Over the course of a series, facial tension may begin to ease, the complexion may appear more vibrant, and gradual changes in facial tone and overall appearance may become more noticeable.

Something you may not necessarily be expecting from a facial treatment: you feel better in your body. With consistency, many people report feeling calmer, more grounded, more at ease, and more capacity to handle day to day stresses.

Twelve treatments are my standard starting point, but care is always individualized. Your age, health history, skin concerns, lifestyle, and goals can all influence the plan I recommend and the results you experience.

After the series, we evaluate your progress and decide what level of maintenance feels appropriate.

What does maintenance look like?

While 12 weekly visits can establish a strong foundation for cumulative change, ongoing treatments may help maintain a radiant complexion and support a calm, balanced body.

After the initial series, appointments are typically spaced to every other week for a few months and then approximately once a month for maintenance. The exact schedule depends on your goals and how your body responds.

Some people choose to continue more frequently because their FRA appointment becomes an important part of their self-care. It offers time to slow down, rest, and replenish—in addition to taking care of their complexion.

Who may be a good candidate?

FRA may be a good option for adults at different stages of the aging process.

You may be interested in treatment if:

  • You’ve begun noticing fine lines, dullness, puffiness, changes in facial tone, or other signs of aging

  • You feel that stress and fatigue are showing on your face

  • You want to support your skin before more significant changes develop

  • You prefer gradual, natural-looking changes

  • You want a treatment that also supports relaxation and whole-body well-being

  • You would like an alternative or complement to other cosmetic treatments

Many of the people I work with spend much of their time caring for others while balancing work, family, and everyday responsibilities. Their FRA appointment becomes a time when they don’t have to be “on” for anyone else.

FRA isn’t about trying to look 25 again.

It’s about supporting your skin as it changes and helping you feel good in the face you have now.

Potential bruising, redness, and other considerations

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is gentle, but it is still an acupuncture treatment.

Temporary effects may include:

  • Mild redness at the needle sites

  • Pinpoint bleeding

  • Minor bruising

  • Temporary tenderness

  • Feeling tired or lightheaded after treatment

If experienced, these responses are usually mild and resolve on their own. Bruising is possible even when careful techniques are used, so it’s helpful to keep this in mind if you have an important event coming up.

Before treatment, please tell me if you:

  • Bruise or bleed easily

  • Have a bleeding or clotting disorder

  • Take blood-thinning medication or supplements

  • Have an active infection, rash, open wound, or significant irritation on your face

  • Recently received Botox, fillers, laser treatment, a chemical peel, or another cosmetic procedure

  • Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant

Do not stop any prescribed medication without speaking with the clinician who prescribed it. Sharing this information simply helps me determine whether treatment is appropriate and whether your plan needs to be modified.

If you recently had another cosmetic procedure, we’ll discuss the timing and make sure your skin and tissues have had enough time to settle before beginning treatment.

FRA is not performed during pregnancy in my practice.

How can I get started?

The first step is to book a New Patient Consultation and Assessment.

This gives us time to talk about your health history, skin concerns, lifestyle, and goals. You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the treatment process, and decide whether FRA feels like the right fit for you.

If we decide to move forward, we’ll create an individualized treatment plan and schedule your first FRA session.

If you’re looking for a natural, whole-person approach to skin rejuvenation, I’d love to help you feel more refreshed and confident in your skin.

Jacqueline Fusari

My first encounter with Acupuncture was as a teenager suffering from severe, chronic back pain. I was used to being active and involved in sports, and I was no longer able to participate due to my back pain. I went to many doctors and specialists, but couldn’t get any relief. As a last resort, my mom took me to see an acupuncturist.

It was the only thing that helped alleviate my pain! I finally had hope that I could be free of pain again. After a series of acupuncture treatments, I was able to go about my life with ease. I had such a transformative experience of healing–I could jog, do yoga, and swim again– pain free. This profound experience planted the seed that would lead me to studying Acupuncture and helping others through this medicine.

I decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, earning my Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, MAOM, from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 2021. During this time, I spent over 800 hours in the clinic with patients. I am nationally board certified in Acupuncture and Herbology, a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine, and a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist in the state of Connecticut.

In 2022, I relocated from Oregon to Connecticut with my partner and dog to be closer to family. My practice is located in Avon, Connecticut. I am fluent in American Sign Language and, in my practice, I seek to provide an experience that is accessible and inclusive for all.
