What Is Holistic Microneedling—and How Is It Different?

Many of us are curious about microneedling because we want to support our skin naturally and refresh the appearance of our complexion—without injections, toxins, or fillers.

But the skin doesn’t exist separately from the rest of the body. The health and appearance of our skin can be influenced by factors such as stress, sleep, hydration, circulation, hormonal changes, and overall well-being.

Think of a tree with wilted leaves. Focusing only on the leaves may not give the plant everything it needs to thrive. We also need to nourish the roots and support the whole plant for the leaves to become healthier and more vibrant.

Holistic microneedling takes a similar approach. It treats the skin directly while also supporting overall health and well-being—creating a healthier, more vibrant complexion from the inside out.

What is included in a holistic microneedling session?

What makes a microneedling session “holistic”?

It brings together full-body acupuncture, professional facial microneedling, and optional red light therapy to support both the skin and the whole person.

Full-body acupuncture

Acupuncture supports your overall well-being and helps restore balance throughout the body. Points are selected according to your individual treatment plan and may focus on calming the nervous system, easing stress and tension, supporting circulation, digestion, hormonal health, and a greater sense of balance throughout the body.

Professional facial microneedling

A professional microneedling device is used to treat the face and jawline, with the option to include the neck and chest. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, microneedling stimulates the body’s natural production of collagen and may help improve concerns such as fine lines, uneven tone and texture, enlarged pores, and certain types of scarring.

The depth and technique are adjusted according to the treatment area, your goals, and how your skin responds.

A more aggressive treatment does not necessarily create better results. The aim is to provide the appropriate level of stimulation while supporting the skin’s natural repair and renewal processes.

Red light therapy

Optional red light therapy may be included to prepare the skin, help calm inflammation, and support its natural ability to recover.

Together, these elements create a treatment that supports your skin while making the session feel relaxing and restorative.

How is this different from a conventional microneedling appointment?

My holistic approach

  • Considers the skin and the whole person

  • Combines microneedling with full-body acupuncture and optional red light therapy

  • Balances targeted skin treatment with a restorative experience

Conventional microneedling

  • Primarily focuses on the area of skin being treated

  • Centers the appointment around microneedling

  • May have a more standardized or procedure-focused approach

Treatment approaches vary between practitioners and clinics, so this is not meant to suggest that all conventional treatments are identical.

What can I expect during a holistic microneedling session?

You’ll arrive with a clean face—and a clean neck and chest if we are treating those areas as well. Please do not apply makeup, sunscreen, or other skincare products before your appointment.

We’ll begin by reviewing your concerns, goals, and what you would like to focus on during treatment.

Then, you’ll settle comfortably onto the treatment table. A table warmer and heat lamp are available to help you feel warm and relaxed.

If you choose to include red light therapy, protective goggles will be placed over your eyes while you rest under the device. This helps prepare and support the skin for treatment.

Next, numbing cream is applied to the areas being treated. The numbing cream is intended to make the treatment more comfortable, although individual sensations can vary.

Acupuncture points are selected according to your individual needs and the patterns identified during your consultation. Acupuncture can help settle the body and calm the mind, creating space for you to rest and restore.

Once the numbing cream is removed, the treatment area is thoroughly cleansed.

Then we’re ready to microneedle!

A nutrient-rich serum is applied to help the microneedling pen glide comfortably across the skin. The treatment creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the skin’s natural healing response and boost collagen and elastin production.

During treatment, you may experience warmth, a scratching sensation, or mild discomfort, particularly around bony areas, such as the forehead.

Afterward, your skin may feel warm, tight, or mildly sensitive—similar to a mild sunburn. Some pinkness or redness is also common and can vary depending on your skin and the intensity of treatment. It often begins to subside within 24 to 48 hours, although everyone’s skin responds differently.

After your initial session, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions along with samples of the nutrient-rich skincare products used during treatment.

What results can you realistically expect?

I know many of us want to see results right away. While everyone’s skin responds differently, some people notice a smoother texture and a healthy glow after their first or second session.

More noticeable and lasting changes in tone, texture, firmness, and overall appearance usually take time and consistency.

Collagen production and remodeling happen gradually, so these changes don’t occur overnight. A series of treatments allows us to work with the skin’s natural repair and renewal processes.

Several factors may influence how your skin responds and how quickly you notice results:

  • Stress: Chronic stress can affect the skin and often shows up in the complexion.

  • Hydration: If the body is dehydrated, the skin may look dry, dull, or less supple.

  • Sun exposure: Repeated sun exposure can damage collagen and contribute to premature skin aging.

  • Sleep: Sleep is essential and gives the body important time to repair and renew.

  • Skincare: Washing the face daily and using consistent home care with gentle, nutrient-rich products can support the skin between sessions.

  • Nutrition: The nutrients we consume provide building blocks for the body to maintain and repair its tissues—including the skin.

I typically recommend a series of four to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. This spacing gives the skin time to move through its natural repair and renewal processes, gradually creating a healthier, more vibrant complexion that looks naturally refreshed.

Who may be a good candidate?

Holistic microneedling may be worth considering if you want to refresh your complexion while maintaining natural-looking results. It may help address uneven tone and texture, fine lines, enlarged pores, or certain types of scarring. It may also be a good fit if you prefer to support your skin’s natural collagen production and value an approach that incorporates relaxation and whole-person care.

Holistic microneedling is just one piece of a comprehensive approach to supporting healthy skin from the inside out. Lifestyle habits, stress management, and consistent skincare also play an important role in caring for our skin naturally as it changes with age.

Microneedling is not appropriate for everyone, which is why we’ll review your health history, skin condition, medications, and treatment goals during your consultation.

Jacqueline Fusari

My first encounter with Acupuncture was as a teenager suffering from severe, chronic back pain. I was used to being active and involved in sports, and I was no longer able to participate due to my back pain. I went to many doctors and specialists, but couldn’t get any relief. As a last resort, my mom took me to see an acupuncturist.

It was the only thing that helped alleviate my pain! I finally had hope that I could be free of pain again. After a series of acupuncture treatments, I was able to go about my life with ease. I had such a transformative experience of healing–I could jog, do yoga, and swim again– pain free. This profound experience planted the seed that would lead me to studying Acupuncture and helping others through this medicine.

I decided to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, earning my Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, MAOM, from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 2021. During this time, I spent over 800 hours in the clinic with patients. I am nationally board certified in Acupuncture and Herbology, a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine, and a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist in the state of Connecticut.

In 2022, I relocated from Oregon to Connecticut with my partner and dog to be closer to family. My practice is located in Avon, Connecticut. I am fluent in American Sign Language and, in my practice, I seek to provide an experience that is accessible and inclusive for all.
